By Incorporating Learning Styles into My Teaching I will ensure academic success for each of my students regardless of level and preferred learning styles.
Students with disabilities? I have a child with Autism that comes to my class and I will need to have the visual clues for him to understand what is expected of him. I always try to know what my student’s disabilities are. I had a child in the past with a wheel chair and had to accommodate by raising the computer table so she could slide her wheelchair under the desk. Second-language learners? We have some second language learners in the school and we use peer tutoring to help them with their lessons and projects. To help in reading and word practice different students are asked to take turns reading aloud to the ell students. Different learning styles (visual, auditory, kinesthetic)? Auditory Learners Students that can recall what they hear and will prefer oral instructions. They learn by listening and speaking. These students enjoy talking and interviewing. They are phonetic readers who enjoy oral reading, choral reading, and listening to recorded books. I will be including discussion and group collaborative work for these students. They will also be giving oral report on their findings. They will also clarify what the teachers instructions were if need be.
Visual Learners Students that will be better at recalling what they have seen and will prefer written instructions. I will be incorporating videos that will reach this learner. They will also be doing things on the computer with graphics, diagrams, charts, concept maps, and wiki site. They learn by observing the instructor.
Kinesthetic Learners Students that learn by touching and manipulating objects. They need to involve their whole body in learning. They are physical learners and learn by acting out. They will enjoy putting the pieces of the project together from paper to computer. Different intelligences (Gardner’s multiple intelligences)?
Verbal-Linguistic: We will be using vocabulary as well as videos and oral presentations.
Logical-Mathematical: We will be using concept maps, venn diagrams, problem solving, and computer software that will appeal to these students.
Visual-Spatial: We will be creating a paper and pencil concept map and convert it to an electronic venn diagram.
Bodily-Kinesthetic: We will be walking around and actively engaged in the project. These students like to use their whole body in a project.
Musical-Rhythmic: These students have a choice of what medium they would like to complete their project in to be uploaded later to their group wiki.
Naturalistic: These students understand the natural world of plants and animals. They will be allowed to choose what medium they would like to use in creating their project.
Interpersonal: We will be working in collaborative groups.
Intrapersonal: We will be working on individual parts of the project.
Students without access to technology in the home? I have 80% low SES students that most don’t have access to a computer. I will need to stay after and have a computer night for these students. I will meet them at the local library; we also have a teaching center that has computers available at night. I also will pull these students from Music, Gym and Library as need be to finish their project. I also will let them use seat work time as time for them to get on the computer leaving them homework to complete at home.
Gifted students? I will need to adapt my project plans so that they can be challenged at their level. I will speak to teachers at a higher grade level to get ideas to actively engage my gifted student. I also would allow them to be in charge of a group. Cultural differences? I have low SES which is sometimes considered a cultural difference. I will have to give these students more time and opportunities to complete their project. I will need to capitalize on my students interest to ensure success for them.
